Pet Travel Must-Haves for Memorial Day Weekend
Pet Travel Must-Haves for Memorial Day Weekend
Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start of summer, and for many pet owners, that means road trips, family visits, cookouts, camping, beach days, or quick weekend getaways. Whether you’re traveling across town or heading out for a longer adventure, bringing your pup along takes a little extra planning.
The right travel supplies can help keep your pet safe and relaxed while you enjoy the holiday weekend together. Before you pack, make sure your pet has everything they need for the trip, the destination, and the trip home. Start with the basics: food, water, bowls, treats, and any medications your pet may need. It is always best to pack more food than you think you will use, especially during a holiday weekend when stores may have limited hours or your dog’s usual brand may not be easy to find. Collapsible bowls are a great option for travel because they're lightweight and easy to pack.
Fresh water is especially important during Memorial Day weekend. Temperatures are often warmer and pets can overheat quickly. Bring bottled water or a refillable travel bottle so your pet can stay hydrated on walks, during car rides, and while spending time outside. If your dog is more active than usual, offer water breaks often.Â
A secure collar or harness with an updated ID tag is one of the most important travel essentials. New places can be exciting or overwhelming for pets, and even well-behaved dogs may get startled by crowds or unfamiliar sounds. Make sure your pet’s ID tag includes your current phone number. A sturdy leash is also a must, and it's a good idea to bring a backup leash just in case one gets misplaced or damaged.
When traveling by car, safety should come first. A pet seat belt, travel crate, carrier, or car seat can help keep your pet secure while you drive. Letting your dogs roam freely in the car can be distracting and unsafe, especially during sudden stops. If your dog isn't used to traveling, introduce their carrier or car restraint before the trip so it feels familiar.
Don’t forget waste bags, litter supplies, grooming wipes, and cleanup products. Travel can interrupt your pet’s normal routine, and accidents can happen. Having dog-safe wipes, stain remover, towels, and extra bags on hand will make cleanup easier.
If your Memorial Day plans include outdoor activities, pack for the weather. Portable fans, shade covers, and pet-safe sunscreen are helpful for sunny days. Before walking your pet, make sure to test the ground with your hand. If it feels too hot for you, it’s too hot for their paws.
The best pet travel experiences start with preparation. When you have the right supplies ready, you can spend less time worrying and more time enjoying the long weekend. With a little planning, your puppy can be part of the holiday fun while staying safe and comfortable for every step of the way.
